Improving Attendance: A Resource Guide for Virginia Schools

Developed for the Virginia Department of Education in 2004, this publication provides school and community personnel with the best available information on truancy prevention and intervention.  Includes sample procedures and forms keyed to the requirements of Virginia ’s compulsory attendance laws.  

Protect and Respect Personal Safety and Crime Prevention Curriculum

Developed for the Governor’s Office for Substance Abuse Prevention, this 29-lesson curriculum is designed to be taught by law enforcement officers with older Virginians as a primary audience. 

KIDsafe Virginia Personal Safety Lessons for Children and Parent Guide to Personal Safety for Children 

KIDsafe Virginia Crime Prevention Lessons for Teens and Parent Guide to Crime Prevention for Teens

These curricula, one for children in grades K-4 and the other for high school students, are designed to be taught by law enforcement officers.  Accompanying Parent Guides reinforce key learning objectives of the lessons or can serve as a stand-alone resource for parents.  Guides may be downloaded at http://www.gosap.state.va.us

Fostering School-Law Enforcement Partnerships. A technical assistance guide developed for the National Resource Center for Safe Schools for the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Crime Prevention.

Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program Coordinators Handbook.
Originally developed for the Virginia Department of Education in 1997 and updated in 2001 and 2003, this Handbook is a compilation of key laws, regulations, procedures, and forms used by local school division Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program Coordinators.

Resource Guide for Crisis Management in Schools.
Developed for the Virginia Department of Education in 2002, this Resource Guide includes a compilation of the most "user friendly" examples of policies, procedures, guidelines, checklists, forms and background information designed to assist schools in planning for and managing a broad range of crises.

A Directory of Youth Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Resources for Schools and Communities in Virginia
Developed for the Virginia Department of Education, this publication is designed as a tool for schools and communities to identify resources to assist them in their efforts to prevent youth substance abuse and violence.  Developed with guidance from an expert interagency advisory group, the Directory includes public and private agencies and organizations at the national, state, and local levels.

Virginia State Incentive Grant Evaluation Guide
Developed for the Governor's Office for Substance Abuse Prevention, this guide was designed to assist State Incentive Grant (SIG) funding recipients in conducting quality local project evaluations consistent with the SIG Evaluation Framework developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.  The publication describes the design of the multi-level evaluation, what constructs are being measured, and the research base and includes a timetable for reporting and sample instruments.

The Virginia School Search Resource Guide
Developed for the Virginia Department of Education, the Guide was developed under the guidance of an expert panel and is intended to be used by local school boards, superintendents, building administrators, and school board attorneys in the development and implementation of sound policy. The Guide includes legal principles and definitions related to school searches as well as sample policies, procedures, checklists, and forms.

The Successful School Resource Officer Program:  Effective School and Law Enforcement Partnerships
Published by Greystone Publishers, Inc., (www.greystonepublishers.com)  this is the only comprehensive guide to School Resource Officer Programs.  The publication includes information on community policing in schools, fundamental SRO roles and responsibilities, the school environment, working with adolescents, the SRO and school safety, evaluating the SRO program, key resources, and sample forms.

Developing the Successful School Resource Officer Program:  A Guide to Effective School-Law Enforcement Partnerships in Virginia
Developed for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services with a grant from the Governor's Office for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities, this guide is given to law enforcement officers who complete DCJS's SRO Basic Training and is used as the primary Guide for School Resource Officer Programs throughout Virginia.

Model School Crisis Management Plan

Developed for the Virginia State Board of Education in 1999 in response to  amendments to § 22.1-278.1, Code of Virginia, enacted by the 1999 General Assembly, the Model Plan is designed as a tool by localities in developing or refining school crises plans.  It focuses on (a) preparation for crises, (b) identification and intervention with students who may present a potential threat, (c) response to events which impact the school, but do not present serious threat of harm to students, personnel, or facilities, and (d) management of critical incidents which do involve threats of harm.  Copies of the Model School Crisis Management Plan can be obtained from the Office of Compensatory Programs, Virginia Department of Education, or downloaded from their website:  http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/model.html

  Virginia Juvenile Law Handbook for School Administrators

Originally developed in 1997 and updated in 1999, 2002 and 2004, this publication was developed for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and has been disseminated to schools, law enforcement agencies, and juvenile courts throughout Virginia.   

 

Virginia Violence Prevention in Virginia:  A Needs Assessment

Developed in collaboration with the Virginia Youth Violence Project at the University of Virginia, this publication was developed in 1999 for the Center for Injury and Violence Prevention, Virginia Department of Health.  The publication examines the scope of youth violence in Virginia, what has been found to be effective, current initiatives, and identified needs, and offers recommendations for what needs to be done in Virginia.  The publication can be purchased from the Virginia Youth Violence Project at http://youthviolence.edschool.virginia.edu.

Program Planning and Evaluation Handbook, 2nd Edition

Developed in 1999 as a resource for the Virginia Effective Practices Project, James Madison University and co-authored with JMU faculty members, this publication is designed to assist local prevention program coordinators to plan and evaluate programs in a manner consistent with U.S. Department of Education Safe and Drug-Free School and Communities Act Principles of Effectiveness.  The publication has been disseminated to all Virginia school divisions and to many other agencies and organizations providing community-based prevention programs.  Available from the Virginia Effective Practices Project and can be downloaded from the Project website: http://www.jmu.edu/cisat/vepp

Local Advisory Council Primer

Developed in 1998 as a resource for local Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Advisory Councils, this publication is a product of the Virginia Effective Practices Project, James Madison University.  The Primer has been disseminated to over 2500 Local Advisory Council members in every Virginia locality.  Available from the Virginia Effective Practices Project and can be downloaded from the Project website:  http://www.jmu.edu/cisat/vepp

 

Guide to the Successful School Resource Officer Program

Developed in 1999 for the Governor's Office for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities, this publication is being disseminated to school resource officers throughout Virginia and is being used in the Basic SRO Training conducted by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.  Available from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Crime Prevention Unit.

School Resource Officer Program Resource Guide

Developed in 1997 for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, the Guide is a compilation of readings and useful resources for School Resource Officers in Virginia.  The Guide has been disseminated throughout Virginia and used in SRO trainings.

Resource Guide for Crisis Management in Schools

Developed in 1996 for the Virginia Department of Education, this Resource Guide has been broadly disseminated and used in the training of thousands of Virginia educators and law enforcement personnel.  Permission has been granted to several other states to reprint the publication.   

 

Early Reading Interventions:  What Works?

Developed for the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium (MERC), School of Education, Virginia Commonwealth University, the study (1) examined differences in programs and practices employed in area school to teach successful and unsuccessful at-risk students to read; (2) determined relationships among identified problems, reading interventions, and outcomes; and (3) presented implications of the study for schools.  Available from MERC at http://www.vcu.edu/eduweb/soe.

Governor's Plan for a Safe and Drug-Free Virginia

Developed for Governor Allen in 1996, the Plan includes a Background Report as well as a set of goals and objectives with specific strategies to be undertaken.  The plan was termed "a model for other states" by U.S. Department of Education officials who reviewed the plan.
